Chapter 11 - THE GHOSTS OF THE LOOP

The transition from civilian to syndicate boss did not come with a manual. It came with ledgers, burner phones, and the unspoken understanding that every shadow in Chicago could hide a knife. Evelyn Carter spent her first month as the head of the North Side logistics grid drowning in shipping manifests and port authority bribes. The Ashland bunker became her home, a concrete fortress where the sun never shone and the coffee always tasted like copper and adrenaline. Lorenzo Moretti watched her evolution with a quiet, dangerous pride. He never coddled her. When the longshoremen union tried to strike, testing the new "waitress" boss, Lorenzo didn't step in. He stood back, leaning against the doorframe of her new office, swirling bourbon in a glass while she made the calls that cut the union's illicit kickbacks by sixty percent in an hour. They fell into line by midnight.
But peace in Chicago was an illusion, a temporary truce written in disappearing ink. The Giannelli family was dead, but nature abhors a vacuum. Whispers began to circulate through the underground casinos and speakeasies. A faction from New York, the Calabrese syndicate, was probing the borders of the Moretti territory. They were testing the waters, sending low-level runners to push product through Evelyn's newly acquired docks.
"They think we're weak because we just finished a war," Lorenzo said one evening, his dark eyes locked on the tactical map glowing on the bunker wall. The neon blue lines of their territory were blinking red at the eastern edge.
Evelyn walked up beside him, her charcoal suit hugging her frame, her mind sharp and unyielding. "They don't think we are weak, Lorenzo. They think I am weak. They see a woman who was serving martinis three months ago and assume I don't have the stomach for what comes next." She reached out, her finger tracing the red blinking light at Pier 39. "Let them send their next shipment. But we don't block it. We let it dock. And then we burn it to the waterline."
Lorenzo turned to her, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his handsome face. The raw ambition in her eyes was intoxicating. "You want to start a war with New York, Evelyn?"
May you like
"I want to finish a conversation before they even open their mouths," she replied coldly.
