Chapter 27 - THE DIGITAL SIEGE

War in the modern age was not fought solely with automatic rifles and warehouse shootouts; it was fought in the invisible lanes of cyberspace and financial architecture. While Marco and the enforcers prepared physical blockades across the city's perimeter, Evelyn locked herself in the Ashland bunker with a team of elite hackers she had quietly vetted and recruited over the past six months.

The glowing monitors cast a ghostly blue light across her face as she typed commands into a secure, encrypted terminal.

"Status report," Evelyn commanded without looking up.

"We've breached the primary proxy servers linked to Kravchenko's offshore accounts in the Caymans and Cyprus," responded Leo, a brilliant, twenty-two-year-old cyber specialist recruited from MIT. "We're routing a continuous drain script through their primary laundering nodes."

"Don't just drain them," Evelyn corrected sharply. "Leave a signature. I want them to know exactly who is taking their money. Every cent they parked in Western accounts needs to flow directly into municipal infrastructure funds for the South Side schools. Let Viktor finance the education of the children his predecessors tried to exploit."

Lorenzo walked behind her, watching the cascading lines of code scrolling across the screens with a mixture of amusement and fierce admiration. "You are literally robbing the Russian mafia to pay for public education in Chicago."

"It's about establishing a new precedent," Evelyn said, leaning back in her chair and rubbing her temples. "The old mobs built their empires on fear and extortion. We are going to build ours on infrastructure and institutional dominance. When the city realizes we are more stable, more reliable, and more beneficial than the federal government, no foreign syndicate will ever be able to penetrate our borders again."

Suddenly, a red alert flashed across the central console.

"Boss!" Leo yelled, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "We've got an inbound packet—massive DDOS attack and a counter-trace originating from a private server farm in downtown Chicago. They're trying to lock us out of our own grid!"

Evelyn snapped upright. Her eyes locked on the incoming data streams. "They aren't just counter-attacking. They're trying to override the port authority signals to crash a cargo freighter into the Navy Pier slip."
