Chapter 12 - SHADOWS ON THE DOCKS

The air at Pier 39 smelled of dead fish, diesel fuel, and impending violence. Evelyn stood in the shadows of a massive shipping container, the midnight fog rolling off Lake Michigan and clinging to her trench coat. She was not alone. Fifty of Moretti’s most hardened enforcers formed a silent perimeter around the docks. At her side stood Marco, Lorenzo’s right-hand man, a giant of a man who looked at Evelyn with newfound respect. Lorenzo was coordinating from the bunker, allowing Evelyn to command the field. This was her territory. Her test.
Through the fog, the low hum of a freighter’s engine rumbled in the distance. The Calabrese ship, the Iron Maiden, was cutting through the black water, entirely unaware that it was sailing into a trap. Evelyn checked the gold Rolex on her wrist—a gift from Lorenzo. 11:45 PM. Right on schedule.
"Boss," Marco whispered, his voice like gravel. "They're dropping the gangway. I count twenty armed men. Heavies. New York muscle."
"Hold the line," Evelyn commanded, her voice steady despite the adrenaline spiking in her veins. She watched as the Calabrese men began unloading crates of untraceable weaponry and narcotics. They moved with the arrogant swagger of men who believed they were untouchable. They thought Chicago was theirs for the taking.
When the last crate touched the concrete pier, Evelyn stepped out of the shadows. The fog seemed to part for her. The New York capos froze, their hands dropping to their holsters as fifty laser sights painted their chests in a sea of red dots.
"Welcome to Chicago," Evelyn called out, her voice echoing off the metal containers. "Unfortunately, your cargo has been seized by the port authority."

Before the lead Calabrese enforcer could raise his weapon, Marco gave the signal. The night erupted into chaos. Evelyn didn't flinch as the gunfire shattered the silence of the docks. She watched with cold calculation as the New York crew was disarmed and forced to their knees. She walked up to the trembling captain, dropped a Zippo lighter on the nearest open crate of contraband, and watched the flames catch. "Tell your bosses," Evelyn said softly, the fire reflecting in her eyes, "the North Side is closed."
