Chapter 23 - THE CROSSFIRE AT SECTOR 7

"Ambush!" Marco roared, shoving Evelyn and Lorenzo behind a massive pillar of concrete just as a hail of automatic gunfire shattered the upper windows and chewed the metal crates to splinters.
Glass, wood, and concrete dust exploded into the air, creating a blinding, choking fog. The Moretti enforcers instantly returned fire, their suppressed weapons snapping rhythmically in the enclosed space, muzzle flashes cutting through the gloom like angry lightning.
Evelyn pressed her back against the cold pillar, her heart hammering against her ribs, but her mind remained razor-sharp. Adrenaline didn't paralyze her anymore; it calibrated her. She pulled her own sidearm from her holster, checking the clip with mechanical efficiency.
"They're coming from the catwalks! Four shooters on the left, three on the right!" Evelyn shouted over the deafening roar of gunfire, her tactical assessment instantaneous.
Lorenzo peered around the edge of the pillar, firing two rapid shots that dropped an assailant from the overhead rail with a sickening thud. "They knew we were coming, Evie! This wasn't a random stash—it was a trap designed to draw us out!"
"Then we change the math," Evelyn replied coldly. She caught Marco's eye through the haze of smoke. She signaled with two sharp hand gestures—universal syndicate commands for a pincer maneuver. Marco nodded grimly, gesturing to the remaining enforcers to flank the rear exit stairs.
While Lorenzo kept the upper gunmen suppressed with steady, calculated fire, Evelyn sprinted across the open floor, sliding behind a row of empty steel drums. She didn't hesitate. She fired upward, taking down the spotter controlling the warehouse lighting grid.
