Chapter 9 - The Siege of Newark

The rain had stopped, leaving a heavy, suffocating humidity hanging over the industrial outskirts of Newark. The sprawling warehouse district controlled by the Maroni family looked like a ghost town under the amber glare of sodium streetlights, but beneath the surface, it was crawling with armed soldiers.

They didn't expect a frontal assault. They expected Vincent Costa to hide behind his corporate lawyers and high-tech security systems.

They were wrong.

A massive flatbed truck smashed through the chain-link security gates of the Maroni compound with an ear-splitting screech of tearing metal, followed closely by a convoy of three black armored suburbans. Doors flew open before the vehicles even came to a complete stop, and a dozen syndicate enforcers led by Leo poured out, weapons drawn, returning heavy suppressive fire against the startled guards.

From the passenger seat of the lead vehicle stepped Vincent Costa. He wore a heavy tactical vest over a black turtleneck, his face set in stone, his eyes black as obsidian. Beside him, stepping down onto the wet gravel with a cold, calculated composure, was Mave. She wore a dark trench coat, a suppressed pistol holstered neatly beneath her arm—no longer the victim hiding in the corner, but an active architect of their destruction.

"Clear the perimeter!" Vincent roared over the deafening chatter of gunfire.

The battle was short, brutal, and utterly one-sided. Maroni’s men, caught completely off guard by the sheer aggression and precision of the Costa strike force, were systematically disarmed and neutralized within minutes. Smoke billowed from the main warehouse doors as flashbangs detonated inside, lighting up the night with blinding white strobes.

Vincent marched through the front entrance of the primary office building, kicking the heavy oak door wide open.

Marco Maroni sat at his desk, desperately trying to load a nickel-plated revolver, his hands shaking uncontrollably as the sound of boots echoed closer. Julian Vance stood beside him, holding a briefcase stuffed with bearer bonds and passport documents, preparing to bolt through a private exit.

The door slammed against the wall.

Vincent stepped into the room, his rifle leveled squarely at Marco’s chest. Leo and two armed guards flanked him, sealing off the exits.

"It's over, Marco," Vincent said softly, his voice cutting through the tense silence like a razor blade.

Marco dropped the revolver onto the mahogany desk, raising his hands, a pathetic, nervous sweat beading on his forehead. "Costa... wait. We can make a deal. The eastern ports, all of them—they're yours. Just—"

Before Marco could finish, Julian Vance made a desperate gamble. He whipped a compact submachine gun out of his briefcase, snapping the barrel toward Vincent's blind spot.

Mave didn't hesitate. Years of analyzing risks had taught her to see the fatal variable before anyone else. She drew her pistol from her holster with lightning speed and fired a single, clean shot.

The bullet struck Julian squarely in the wrist. The submachine gun slipped from his hand with a metallic clatter, and he screamed, clutching his shattered arm as he collapsed against the filing cabinets.

May you like

Vincent didn't even look back at Julian. He kept his eyes locked on Marco, walking slowly across the room until the barrel of his rifle was resting inches from Marco’s nose.

"You threatened everything that matters to me," Vincent whispered, his voice dangerously low. "And for that, your empire belongs to history."
