Chapter 16 - Building an Empire of Light

Six months after the fall of Senator Dale, the transformation of the Costa enterprise was complete. The dark, clandestine smuggling operations of the old underworld had been entirely phased out, replaced by a sprawling, legitimate international shipping and logistics conglomerate known as Costa Global Logistics.
Inside the newly designed executive penthouse office on the fiftieth floor, the walls were no longer draped in heavy shadows and dark wood. Sunlight poured generously through pristine glass panels, illuminating minimalist white marble furniture, contemporary art, and endless views of a thriving, peaceful Boston harbor.
Mave sat at her new glass-top executive desk, reviewing the quarterly financial audit. The numbers were immaculate. No hidden ledgers, no offshore discrepancies, no smuggled contraband—just pure, high-yield international commerce.
The heavy mahogany office door swung open, and Vincent walked in carrying two cups of artisanal coffee. He placed one gently beside her keyboard, leaning down to press a soft kiss against the crown of her head.
"You've been staring at those spreadsheets for three hours straight," Vincent noted, a gentle amusement in his voice. "Even the most brilliant auditor in the world deserves a lunch break."
Mave leaned back in her ergonomic leather chair, stretching her arms above her head with a satisfied smile. "I'm not auditing, Vincent. I'm admiring. For the first time in three years, every single entry on these pages is entirely legal, transparent, and built to last."
Vincent pulled up a chair, sitting directly opposite her, resting his elbows on the glass desk. His dark eyes softened as he looked at her. "You built this. Every brick of this legitimate empire rests on the foundation of your brilliance and your courage."
"We built it together," Mave corrected softly, reaching across the desk to intertwine her fingers with his. "From the moment you stood between me and Frankie Burke in that ballroom."
Vincent’s expression turned deeply affectionate. "Speaking of that ballroom... it feels like a lifetime ago. A different world entirely."
"A world we left behind," Mave replied firmly.
"Which brings me to a proposition," Vincent said, a mysterious, playful glint sparkling in his dark eyes. "An executive decision that doesn't require an audit."
Mave arched an elegant eyebrow. "Oh? And what decision is that, Mr. Costa?"

"Costa Global Logistics is running itself smoothly. Leo has the ports locked down tighter than a Swiss vault. I think it's time the two highest-ranking executives take an extended, indefinite leave of absence." Vincent reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out two first-class plane tickets to the Amalfi Coast. "What do you say we leave the spreadsheets behind for a while and go see what the rest of the world looks like when we aren't fighting for our lives?"
Mave looked down at the tickets, then back up into his devoted eyes. A radiant, breathless smile spread across her face. "Mr. Costa, I think that is the best financial decision you've ever made."
