Chapter 15 - The Final Trial

Three months later, the federal courtroom in downtown Boston was packed to capacity. Flashbulbs blinded the steps outside as journalists clamored for the biggest political corruption trial of the decade. Inside, Senator Arthur Dale sat at the defense table, his aura of untouchable power completely shattered, listening impassumately as federal prosecutors read out thirty-four counts of racketeering, bribery, and conspiracy.

Mave sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a sharp, elegant navy blue blazer. Vincent sat beside her, his hand resting securely over hers, their fingers interlaced.

When the judge’s gavel finally slammed down with a resounding thud, pronouncing a sentence of forty-five years without parole for Dale, a collective exhale swept through the courtroom. The threat that had shadowed their lives, the corruption that had poisoned the underworld and the government alike, was finally eradicated.

As they stepped out onto the courthouse steps, a wall of reporters and cameras surged forward, shouting questions.

"Mr. Costa! Does this mean the Costa Syndicate is going legitimate?"

"Ms. Mave! What is your role in the new corporate structure?"

Vincent didn't stop for the microphones. He pulled Mave close against his side, shielding her from the flashing lights, and guided her effortlessly toward the waiting Maybach.

As the heavy armored door clicked shut behind them, sealing out the noise of the city, Vincent let out a deep, relaxed sigh, leaning his head back against the leather seat.

"It's over," Vincent whispered, turning to look at her. "Really over."

Mave smiled, her eyes shining with the bright promise of a future they had fought tooth and nail to secure. "Good. Because I'm exhausted from saving your empire, Mr. Costa."

Vincent laughed—a rich, genuine sound that he reserved only for her. He pulled her into his arms, kissing her softly, deeply, sealing the end of the war and the beginning of their forever.
