Chapter 11 - The Shadow of the Past

The morning sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling glass of the Costa Syndicate headquarters, casting long, sharp lines across the polished mahogany desk. Mave stood by the window, reviewing the digital manifests of the incoming European cargo ships, her fingers gliding effortlessly across the tablet screen. Every column balanced. Every transaction was legitimate. The empire was cleaner, stronger, and more profitable than it had ever been in its turbulent history.

Yet, a subtle unease lingered in the back of her mind.

The door clicked open, and Vincent walked in, his tailored charcoal jacket slung over one broad shoulder, a steaming cup of espresso in his hand. He noticed the slight furrow in her brow immediately. He crossed the room in quiet strides, setting the cup down on the desk before coming up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist to pull her close.

"The numbers don't balance?" Vincent murmured, his voice a low, grounding rumble against her ear.

"The numbers balance down to the exact cent," Mave replied softly, leaning back into his warmth. "It’s not the accounts, Vincent. It’s the silence. The Maroni syndicate fell too easily. When an empire that size collapses overnight, the shockwaves don't just disappear—they ripple outward. Someone out there is picking through the wreckage."

Vincent’s jaw tightened slightly, his dark eyes darkening with sudden alertness. He knew Mave’s instincts were sharper than a dozen surveillance networks. "What did you find?"

"Nothing yet. And that's what worries me," she turned in his arms, looking up into his face. "When Julian Vance and Marco Maroni went down, their offshore accounts in Zurich didn't vanish. They were transferred. Someone with deep pockets and federal clearance stepped in and absorbed their remaining assets forty-eight hours after the raid."

Vincent released a slow, controlled breath, his hands sliding down to grip her hands gently. "If there’s a new player trying to fill the vacuum in our territory, we’ll find them. But today is about us. Tonight is the annual harbor charity gala—the exact same venue where we crossed paths six months ago. You’re coming with me, not as my auditor, not as my partner in the underground, but as my equal."

Mave offered a small, confident smile, the lingering tension dissolving. "I wouldn't miss it for the world."
