Chapter 12 - The Invitation

That evening, the grand Plaza ballroom glittered under thousands of crystal chandelier lights, echoing with the soft, elegant strains of a live classical quartet. Unlike the night of the shooting six months ago, the atmosphere tonight was secure, guarded by elite operatives stationed discreetly at every exit, ensuring that the elite of Boston could mingle in absolute safety.
Mave descended the grand marble staircase on Vincent’s arm, turning heads in a breathtaking emerald-green silk gown that shimmered with every step. She moved with a quiet, lethal grace—no longer the timid secretary hiding behind spreadsheets, but the undisputed queen of the underworld's legitimate front.
As they reached the main floor, a sleek, silver-haired man in an impeccably tailored white tuxedo stepped out from the crowd, holding two glasses of champagne. He intercepted them with a charming, easy smile that didn't quite reach his cold, calculating blue eyes.
"Vincent Costa," the man said smoothly, his voice cultured and dripping with old-money authority. "And the brilliant Mave. It is an absolute honor to finally meet the minds behind Boston's economic renaissance."
Vincent’s posture stiffened instantly, his hand dropping casually near his jacket pocket. "Senator Dale. Or should I call you by your real title—adviser to the syndicate remnants?"
Arthur Dale chuckled softly, unruffled by the direct hostility. He took a slow sip of his champagne. "Such paranoia, Vincent. I am simply a businessman interested in stability. The Maroni family were crude animals; they brought chaos to the ports. But you and I? We share a vision. Clean ledgers, high margins, and total governmental cooperation."
Mave stared at Dale, her mind racing back to the Belize offshore accounts and the federal routing codes she had decrypted months ago. "You were the one who authorized the port override codes for Donald Vance," she said coldly, her voice cutting through the festive music like glass. "You weren't just an adviser. You were their silent partner in Washington."
Dale’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a razor-sharp glint of malice. "Watch your tongue, young lady. Washington is a very large place, and accidents happen to auditors who look too closely at federal infrastructure grants."

Vincent stepped forward, placing his body squarely between Dale and Mave. His eyes locked onto the senator with a terrifying, predatory intensity. "If you ever look at her, speak to her, or breathe in her direction again, Senator, I won't just ruin your political career. I will feed you to the fish in Boston Harbor."
Dale’s face paled beneath his tan. He forced a stiff nod, turned on his heel, and melted back into the crowd of oblivious politicians.
