Chapter 17 - The Amalfi Horizon

The Mediterranean sun painted the rugged cliffs of Positano in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and terracotta. A gentle, salt-kissed breeze drifted across the private terrace of the clifftop villa, carrying the scent of blooming lemon trees and the distant, soothing rhythm of waves crashing against the rocky shore below.

Mave stood at the edge of the stone balcony, leaning against the wrought-iron railing, letting the warm Italian sunshine wash over her face. She wore a simple, elegant white linen sundress, her hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders. The stress of the Boston underworld, the flickering neon lights of Newark alleys, and the terrifying gunfights of the past year felt like a distant, hazy dream.

Footsteps echoed softly on the stone pavers behind her. Strong, warm arms circled her waist, and Vincent rested his chin comfortably on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of sea salt and lavender from her hair.

"Penny for your thoughts, Ms. Mave?" Vincent murmured, his voice rich and relaxed, completely stripped of the heavy burden of syndicate command.

Mave turned within his embrace, wrapping her arms loosely around his neck. She looked up into his face, noticing how the perpetual tension lines around his dark eyes had finally smoothed away, replaced by a profound, radiant peace.

"I was just thinking about how strange life is," Mave said softly, a gentle smile playing on her lips. "If someone had told me a year ago that I’d be standing on a cliff in Italy with a reformed mafia boss who owns half of Boston, I would have told them to check their math."

Vincent chuckled, a warm, rich sound that vibrated against her chest. He raised one hand, gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "And your math would have been entirely correct. But life isn't about the numbers on a ledger, Mave. It's about the variables you never expect—the ones that change your entire world for the better."

"You were quite the unpredictable variable, Vincent Costa," she teased lightly.

"And you were the best thing that ever happened to me," he replied, his voice dropping an octave into absolute, unreserved sincerity.

Without breaking eye contact, Vincent slowly stepped back, sinking down gracefully onto one knee on the sun-warmed stone terrace.

Mave’s breath caught sharply in her throat. The world around them seemed to stop entirely—the crashing waves grew quiet, the rustling lemon leaves fell silent, and time itself held its breath.

Vincent reached into the pocket of his linen trousers, pulling out a small, dark velvet box. He flipped the lid open with his thumb. Inside rested a magnificent, flawless diamond ring that caught the Mediterranean sunlight and scattered brilliant prisms of light across the terrace walls.

"Mave," Vincent said, his voice steady, rich, and filled with a profound devotion that transcended words. "You walked into my dark, chaotic world and brought light, balance, and unconditional love. You saved my life, my empire, and my soul. I don't want to just be your partner in business anymore. I want to be your partner for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?"

Tears welled brightly in Mave’s eyes, spilling over her lashes not with sorrow, but with an overwhelming, rushing tide of pure joy.

May you like

"Yes," Mave choked out, a breathless laugh escaping her lips as she dropped down to her knees right beside him. "Yes, Vincent. A thousand times, yes."

Vincent slid the dazzling diamond ring onto her trembling finger, pulled her fiercely into his arms, and kissed her with all the passion, devotion, and fierce loyalty of a man who had conquered the world just to win her heart.
