Chapter 44 - The Weight of Peace

Later that night, long after the household had settled into absolute silence, Sloan lay awake in the dark, watching the pale moonlight drift in slow, shifting patterns across the carved wooden ceiling of their bedroom. Beside her, Raphael slept deeply, his breathing slow and even, one arm thrown protectively across the mattress.

For so many years, sleep had been a fragile, shallow thing—an uneasy suspension between nightmares of past operations and hyper-vigilant wakefulness. Every sudden sound in the night, every creak of settling timber in a safehouse, had been interpreted as a threat. Tonight, the house creaked in the spring wind, and she felt only the comforting solidity of the stone walls around them and the steady, unbreakable warmth of the man beside her.

She gently shifted onto her side, propping her head up on one hand to study Raphael’s face in the dim moonlight. The harsh lines of strain and constant calculation that had once defined his features had softened over the past months, replaced by the deep, peaceful relaxation of a man who no longer had to look over his shoulder.

She reached out, her fingertips tracing the warm skin of his jawline with feather-light precision. Raphael stirred slightly, his dark eyes opening instantly—not with the jagged, startled reflex of an operative waking in a combat zone, but with the quiet, immediate clarity of a man whose first thought upon waking was always her.

"Can't sleep?" he whispered, his voice deep and raspy with sleep as his hand came up to wrap around her wrist, pulling her fingers gently against his lips.

"I can," Sloan whispered back, leaning down to press her forehead softly against his. "I just realized I don't need to stay on guard anymore."

Raphael smiled in the dark, his arms coming up to pull her down fully against his chest, burying his face in her hair. "You haven't had to walk the guard alone for a long time, Sloan. Go to sleep. I've got the watch."
