Chapter 27 - The First Audit of Freedom

By mid-morning, the routine of the estate began to hum with a gentle, self-directed momentum. Unlike the rigid, frantic schedules dictated by boardrooms and underground contacts, their day was entirely their own. Sloan walked down to the hospital clinic—the institution Raphael had restored and funded as a cornerstone of community health—to review the weekly supply inventory.

The clinic was a far cry from the sterile, guarded environments Sloan used to frequent. Sunlight flooded through large bay windows into a waiting room filled with local families, children's books, and potted ferns. The head nurse, a sharp-eyed woman named Clara who knew everyone in the valley, greeted Sloan with a warm nod as she walked past the front desk.

"Inventory is clean, Sloan," Clara said, handing over a neat digital tablet. "All medical supplies accounted for, grants cleared by the state foundation, and not a single delayed shipment in sight. Honestly, your efficiency protocols have made my job entirely too boring."

"Boring is the gold standard of healthcare administration, Clara," Sloan smiled, reviewing the data streams with effortless ease.

Every number on the screen represented life, stability, and community trust—not extortion, leverage, or hidden debt. For the first time in her professional life, Sloan looked at a balance sheet and felt a profound sense of creation rather than containment. The numbers added up to health, education, and safety.

When Raphael arrived around noon to walk her back up to the main house, he found her sitting in the courtyard garden, the winter sun warming her face as she closed the tablet. He slipped his hand into hers, their fingers interlacing naturally, just as their signatures had intertwined on the paper the night before.

"How was the audit?" Raphael asked softly.

"Flawless," Sloan said, leaning her head against his shoulder. "Every asset accounted for, and zero liabilities in sight."
