Chapter 30 - The Awakening Soil

February arrived with biting winds and towering snowdrifts, but inside the estate, preparations for the coming spring were already underway. In the large glass greenhouse attached to the southern wing of the conservatory, Sloan spent her mornings organizing seed trays, testing soil compositions, and mapping out the layout for the new vegetable and herb gardens.
Raphael joined her often, trading his fine wool suits for heavy flannel shirts and leather work gloves, helping her haul bags of organic compost and set up irrigation lines. To the casual observer, the former syndicate boss and his brilliant chief accountant looked like ordinary homesteaders preparing for an honest season of labor.
On a particularly freezing Saturday morning, as steam rose from the damp soil in the greenhouse, Raphael wiped a smudge of dirt from his forehead and looked down at the neat rows of seedling trays.
"According to your master spreadsheet, we have precisely four hundred and twelve tomato plants scheduled for germination," Raphael noted with a mock-serious expression. "Is this an agricultural project or a hostile corporate takeover of the local farmers market?"
"It’s a diversified agricultural portfolio, Raphael," Sloan retorted, a playful smile touching her lips as she tossed a small trowel into a bucket. "And if the tomatoes yield half as well as my spreadsheets predict, we’re going to be feeding the entire valley by August."

"In that case, I defer entirely to your operational expertise," Raphael laughed, stepping over to wrap his arms around her waist, ignoring the streak of potting soil he left on her shoulder. "Though I reserve the right to audit the harvest quality."
The lightness between them was absolute—an effortless joy forged in the aftermath of survival. They had traded power, fear, and shadows for sunlight, soil, and the simple, profound privilege of building something that grew from the earth rather than destroying it.
