Chapter 31 - The Unbroken Horizon

By March, the snow across the Hudson Valley began its slow, majestic retreat, turning the heavy drifts into rushing streams and revealing the rich, dark earth beneath. The estate awoke to the sound of migrating birds, budding trees, and the constant, cheerful hum of local contractors finishing the final touches on the hospital expansion wing.

One crisp afternoon, Sloan and Raphael walked the perimeter of the southern orchard, where the first saplings had just been planted in the freshly turned soil. The sky overhead was a brilliant, sweeping canvas of cobalt blue, stretching out toward the horizon without a single cloud in sight.

Raphael stopped by the edge of the young orchard, running a hand over the thin wooden stake supporting a newly planted apple sapling. He looked out across the rolling hills toward the river, his expression serene and deeply grounded.

"The soil is rich here," Raphael murmured. "Deep roots. Nothing can tear them out easily."

Sloan stood beside him, her hand tucked securely inside his coat pocket, her fingers laced with his. She looked at the sprawling estate, the distant rooftops of the village, and the wide-open valley stretching out before them.

"We built it that way," Sloan said softly. "Every ledger balanced, every debt paid, every stone laid in the light."

The transition was complete. The past was no longer a cage or a specter haunting their footsteps; it was simply the rich, dark soil from which everything truly beautiful had finally grown.
