Chapter 42 - The Library at Twilight

As afternoon bled into evening, the estate took on a golden, amber hue that seemed to slow down time itself. Raphael retreated to the grand library to organize the final shelves of their newly expanded book collection, while Sloan sat by the tall bay window, sketching the layout of the western greenhouse restoration project.

The library was silent save for the occasional soft thud of a heavy leather-bound volume sliding into place and the gentle crackle of the wood fire Raphael had lit to take the chill off the evening air. The walls, once lined with secure filing cabinets containing classified dossiers, financial audits, and operational dossiers, were now entirely covered from floor to ceiling with literature, poetry, philosophy, and natural histories.

Raphael slid a volume of nineteenth-century botanical studies onto the shelf, stepped back, and crossed his arms, surveying the orderly rows with quiet satisfaction. He walked over to the bay window where Sloan was working, leaning down to rest his hands on the wooden frame on either side of her chair, looking over her shoulder at the intricate architectural lines taking shape on the paper.

"You've given the south wing more glass than stone," Raphael observed, his voice a low, warm murmur against her ear. "The Mediterranean citrus will love it, but you're going to spend half your life pruning vines."

"That's the point," Sloan replied without looking up, though a soft smile touched her lips as she felt the familiar heat of his body close behind her. "I want a room where the line between inside and outside disappears entirely. No walls thick enough to hide behind, and no doors heavy enough to lock."

Raphael kissed the crown of her head, lingering there for a moment before resting his chin gently on her shoulder. "No walls," he whispered. "Just light."
