Chapter 40 - The First Seed in the Earth

The morning air was crisp with the lingering chill of early spring, but the soil in the south courtyard was rich, dark, and cooperative under the spade. Sloan knelt on a canvas gardening pad, her gloved hands gripping the wooden handle of a small trowel as she carved out a neat, shallow trench in the freshly turned earth. A few feet away, Raphael worked with a larger shovel, methodically breaking up the heavier clumps of clay where the heritage pear saplings were destined to stand.

For years, their hands had known the cold, uncompromising steel of firearms, the scratchy paper of forged passports, and the frantic clatter of encrypted keyboards under the threat of a closing perimeter. Today, their hands were stained with dark loam and crushed clover.

"How deep do you want this row?" Raphael asked, pausing to wipe a light sheen of sweat from his forehead with the back of his forearm, looking down at her with a gentle, affectionate smile.

"Deep enough to hold against the spring gales," Sloan replied, glancing up with a smudge of dirt across her cheek. "Just like everything else we build now."

Raphael set his shovel aside and walked over, kneeling beside her on the damp earth. Without hesitation, he reached out with a bare hand—ignoring the dirt—and tenderly brushed a stray lock of dark hair away from her forehead, leaving a faint streak of soil in its wake. Sloan laughed, catching his wrist and leaning into his touch for a quiet, lingering moment.

They planted the first three saplings together, steadying the slender trunks upright while shoveling the nutrient-rich soil back into place, tamping it down firmly with their boots. It was slow, patient labor that offered no immediate reward, no adrenaline spike, and no tactical victory. It was simply an investment in a future they were finally guaranteed to see. When the last stake was driven into the ground, they stood side by side, admiring the quiet symmetry of the young orchard against the old stone wall of the estate.
