Chapter 25 - The Final Balance

The clock on the mantelpiece struck midnight, signaling the official transition into a new year—one untainted by hidden debt, old vendettas, or the cold, suffocating fear of the past.

Sloan sat across from Raphael at the small mahogany desk in the conservatory, a single blank sheet of paper resting between them. There were no financial ledgers, no corporate briefs, no legal contracts to sign or audit.

Raphael picked up the fountain pen, dipped the nib into the black inkwell, and slid the paper toward her across the polished wood.

"What's this?" Sloan asked, raising an eyebrow.

"A new balance sheet," Raphael said, his dark eyes shining with quiet, absolute certainty. "Assets: one restored estate, one thriving hospital, one very stubborn accountant who refuses to let me throw glassware."

Sloan smiled, taking the pen from his hand. She didn't write numbers or columns. Instead, she wrote a single sentence at the top of the blank page, clean and unhurried:

All debts paid in full. The future is unwritten.

She signed her name beneath it, and then pushed the paper back across the desk to him. Raphael signed his name beside hers, the two signatures intertwining neatly at the bottom of the page like roots holding fast against the winter wind.

He reached across the desk, taking her hand in his, and as the distant sound of New Year's bells echoed faintly through the snowy Hudson Valley, Sloan knew she had finally found where she belonged. The storm was over, the ledger was balanced, and their story was only just beginning.
