Chapter 9 - The Final Signature

DA Jenkins pushed a single legal document across the metal table toward Gavin.

"The condition is simple," DA Jenkins stated. "You will sign a full confession acknowledging all financial fraud, clearing Brenda Finch and her parents of all legal liability. You will also sign a permanent, legally binding waiver relinquishing any future claims to Nora Mercer’s personal estate, assets, or family trust."

Gavin looked up at me through the glass. His eyes were wide, filled with deep, burning shame.

Five years ago, he had stood in our home and told me I was nothing without him. He had treated me like an inconvenient chapter in his grand story, discarding me the moment he thought he found something better.

Now, his freedom depended entirely on a piece of paper handed to him by the woman he had abandoned.

"Sign it, Gavin," DA Jenkins ordered, slapping a pen onto the table. "Or I file federal racketeering charges that carry a thirty-year minimum sentence."

Gavin’s hands shook so violently he could barely hold the pen. Tears of bitter defeat fell onto the official court document as he pressed the tip to the paper and signed his name: Gavin Albright.

Through the glass, Daniel put his arm around my waist, pulling me close. I took a deep breath, feeling the final, heavy lock of my past drop away forever.

"It's over, Nora," Daniel whispered softly into my hair. "He’ll never touch our lives again."
