Chapter 10 - Justice Served

Three weeks later, the local news headlines across Alabama and Mississippi read: FORMER LOGISTICS CEO SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD.

Gavin Albright was convicted on six federal felony counts. With no funds left for bail or top-tier defense lawyers, he was immediately transported to a medium-security federal correctional facility in Florida to serve his twelve-year sentence.

His company, Albright Logistics, was liquidated by federal bankruptcy court, its remaining trucks sold at auction to cover his debts to the bank, fully protecting Brenda’s parents from losing their home.

Brenda moved back to her hometown in Tennessee, quiet, humbled, and determined to rebuild her life away from the toxic shadow Gavin had cast over everyone around him.

On a warm Saturday morning in Mobile, Daniel, Lily, and I walked through the sunny park near our neighborhood. Lily was riding her pink bicycle ahead of us, her golden hair flying in the gentle breeze as she laughed and waved back at us.

"Look, Mom! No training wheels!" Lily shouted proudly, balancing expertly on two wheels.

"I see you, sweetheart! Be careful!" I called out, my heart overflowing with pure happiness.

Daniel held my hand tightly as we walked along the paved park trail. "You know, when I first met you three years ago at that charity gallery event, I knew within five minutes that you were the most resilient person I’d ever cross paths with."

"I didn't feel resilient back then," I smiled, looking up at him. "I felt broken."

"Broken glass still catches the light, Nora," Daniel said softly, stopping to look into my eyes. "And look at you now. You’re whole, you’re loved, and you built a real family."
