Chapter 3 - Cracks in the Foundation

The color completely drained from Gavin’s face. "Daniel, wait! You can't base a multi-million-dollar corporate decision on a personal grudge!"

"It’s not a grudge, Gavin. It’s risk assessment," Daniel stated calmly. "A man who cheats on his wife, lies to his business partners, and blames everyone else for his failures is a liability. Your firm is bleeding cash, and Mercer Global won't be throwing a lifeline."

Brenda turned to Gavin, her voice sharp with sudden panic. "Gavin... what is he talking about? You said the merger with Mercer Global was a done deal! You said we were getting a five-million-dollar payout!"

Gavin spun on her, his composure completely shattering. "Shut up, Brenda! Not here!"

"Don't tell me to shut up!" Brenda snapped, her voice rising above the wedding music. "You used my family’s savings as collateral for that loan! You told me Daniel Mercer was going to sign the acquisition papers this week!"

"I said we were in negotiations!" Gavin yelled back, forgetting entirely that we were standing in the middle of a formal wedding reception.

Guests were now openly staring. Cousin Emily walked over, looking concerned, but I gave her a subtle nod to let her know everything was under control.

"I think you two should leave," I said softly, looking at Gavin. "You’re ruining Emily’s reception."

Gavin glared at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of rage, humiliation, and deep-seated regret. For five years, he had carried the grand illusion that he was the hero of his own story, that leaving me had elevated him into elite society.

In thirty minutes, that illusion had been utterly shattered.

"This isn't over, Daniel," Gavin hissed, backing away while Brenda furiously followed him toward the exit. "You can't destroy my company over this!"

"You destroyed it yourself, Gavin," Daniel said quietly. "I’m just refusing to pay for the damage."
