Chapter 8 - Behind the Glass

An hour later, Gavin sat in a stark, metal-walled interrogation room at the Mobile Police Headquarters. His expensive suit was torn at the elbow from his arrest, his hair was disheveled, and heavy iron handcuffs chained his wrists to the center of the metal table.

Daniel and I stood behind the two-way glass window in the observation room alongside District Attorney Sarah Jenkins.

"We have him dead to rights," DA Jenkins said, reviewing the flash drive Brenda had provided. "The forged loan documents, the wire transfers, and the recorded phone calls from the sting operation give us a ninety-nine percent conviction probability."

Inside the room, the door opened, and DA Jenkins walked in, laying a thick manila folder on the table.

Gavin looked up, his eyes bloodshot and filled with frantic desperation. "Where is my lawyer? I demand to speak to Arthur Vance!"

"Mr. Vance withdrew as your legal representative twenty minutes ago, Gavin," DA Jenkins said coldly, sitting across from him. "He realized you paid his retainer using funds from a forged bank account."

Gavin slumped back in his chair, breathing heavily. "This is a misunderstanding. Brenda... Brenda signed those loan papers! She’s trying to frame me because we were having marital problems!"

DA Jenkins chuckled softly. "Brenda Finch turned over full state’s evidence three hours ago, Gavin. We have full handwriting analysis proving you forged her signature. Furthermore, we have the recorded statements from your black-market buyer."

Gavin’s face went completely pale. "No... no, please..."

"There is one more thing," DA Jenkins added, leaning forward. "Mr. Daniel Mercer and Mrs. Nora Mercer have agreed not to pursue personal civil damages against your liquid assets, on one condition."

"What condition?!" Gavin gasped, leaning forward as far as his handcuffs would allow. "I’ll agree to anything! Just don't let them send me to federal prison!"

DA Jenkins walked over to the two-way mirror, flipping a switch that turned the glass transparent, revealing Daniel and me standing on the other side.

Gavin stared at us through the glass, his mouth open, utter humiliation washing over his face.
