Chapter 1 - The Unraveling Mask

Gavin stood frozen under the warm chandeliers of the ballroom, his face drained of every drop of color. He stared at Daniel’s hand wrapped around mine, then at six-year-old Lily who was now contentedly leaning against my dress, clutching her little white cardigan.

"Daniel..." Gavin stammered, his confident demeanor crumbling into sheer disbelief. "I... I had no idea you were here. Or that you knew Nora."

Daniel smiled faintly—a calm, commanding expression that immediately dominated the room. "Nora and I have been together for three years, Gavin. Married for one. I’m surprised you didn't know."

Brenda’s mouth hung slightly open. She looked between Daniel and me, her hands clutching her red designer clutch so tightly her knuckles turned pale. Five years ago, when Gavin left me for Brenda, he had convinced everyone—including himself—that he was moving up in the world, leaving behind a quiet wife for a life of high-society ambition.

Now, standing before Daniel Mercer—the founding partner of Mercer Global, a multi-billion-dollar private equity firm—Gavin looked completely outclassed.

"Dad, can I go get that cupcake now?" Lily asked, tugging on Daniel’s sleeve.

"Go ask Aunt Emily near the dessert table, sweetheart," Daniel said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her forehead. "Stay where we can see you."

As Lily skipped away toward the wedding reception cake, Gavin’s eyes followed her before snapping back to me with a look of sharp, suspicious judgment.

"Six years old?" Gavin calculated aloud, his eyes narrowing as a dark thought crossed his mind. "Nora... we divorced five years ago. Are you telling me you were pregnant when I left?"

I almost laughed at his absurd vanity. "No, Gavin. Lily isn't my biological daughter."

Gavin let out a forced, nervous laugh, trying to regain his footing. "Oh. So you’re a stepmother. That explains it. You took on someone else’s child because you couldn't—"

"Lily is adopted, Gavin," Daniel interrupted, his voice dropping into an icy, protective register that made Gavin shut his mouth instantly. "Nora and I adopted her together after her biological parents—my younger sister and her husband—were killed in a car accident four years ago. Nora didn't just step into my life. She gave my orphaned niece a mother when she needed one most."

Gavin blinked, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. The woman he had spent years dismissing as "unambitious" and "inconvenient" had built a family, a life, and a legacy with the very man who held Gavin’s entire career in his hands.
