Chapter 4 - Shadow Debt

Later that night, after Lily had fallen asleep in the back seat of our car on the drive back from Biloxi to our home in Mobile, Daniel reached across the console and took my hand.
"Are you okay?" he asked softly, his thumb gently caressing my knuckles.
"I'm better than okay," I admitted, looking out the window at the moonlit Gulf waters. "For five years, I held onto a tiny piece of doubt, wondering if I was the reason our marriage failed. Hearing him talk tonight... seeing who he really is... it cleared away the last shadow."
"He never deserved you, Nora," Daniel said, his voice deep and sincere. "Not for a single second."
"Why didn't you tell me Gavin was applying for funding from Mercer Global?" I asked, looking over at him.
Daniel gave a rueful chuckle. "Because I didn't want him to occupy a single second of your thoughts. His firm applied through our commercial lending branch three months ago. I flagged the file the moment I saw his name, but I wanted our auditing team to do a completely unbiased review first."
"And what did they find?"
Daniel’s tone turned serious. "Gavin didn't just mismanage his company, Nora. He’s been taking out fraudulent loans using inflated asset valuations. Brenda’s father put up his retirement property as collateral, and Gavin cooked the books to make Albright Logistics look profitable."
I gasped. "He’s committing fraud?"
"He’s desperate," Daniel explained. "If he doesn't secure three million dollars in refinancing by the end of the month, the bank is going to freeze his commercial accounts and initiate foreclosure. That’s why he was so arrogant tonight—he thought he could manipulate his way into a deal."

I looked back at sweet little Lily sleeping peacefully in her car seat.
"Karma has a strange way of finding people," I whispered.
