Chapter 17 - The Syndicate Strikes

Before the ink on the federal warrants could even dry, the sinister reality of Dragov's reach made itself terrifyingly known.

Adrian was standing in the courthouse hallway, briefing Marcus on the tactical approach for the harbor raid, when his encrypted cell phone rang.

The caller ID was entirely blank, displaying only a chilling string of zeros.

"Adrian Caldwell," a heavy, thick Eastern European accent echoed through the phone line.

"I see you have decided to play federal games with my business."

Adrian felt a cold knot form in the pit of his stomach, recognizing the voice of Victor Dragov instantly.

"Your business is over, Dragov," Adrian replied, his voice dangerously calm and composed.

"The federal marshals are mobilizing as we speak, and there is nowhere on this planet you can hide from me."

Dragov let out a slow, cruel laugh that sent shivers violently down Adrian's spine.

"I do not need to hide, Mr. Caldwell, because I hold the ultimate leverage," Dragov stated smoothly.

"We knew your estate was too heavily fortified to breach a second time, so we watched the people who came and went."

"An hour ago, a lovely maid named Grace left your property to buy a birthday cake for her sweet daughter, Lily."

Adrian's breath caught in his throat as the horrifying realization hit him like a physical blow.

"They did not make it to the bakery," Dragov continued, his voice dripping with sadistic pleasure.

"I have the woman and the little girl locked inside a shipping container on dock number four."

"If you do not call off the federal raid and wire one hundred million dollars into my account within thirty minutes, I will drop their container into the bottom of the ocean."

The phone clicked dead, leaving Adrian staring blankly at the screen in pure, unadulterated horror.

He turned to Marcus, his face completely drained of all color and emotion.

"They have Grace and Lily," Adrian whispered, the terrifying weight of the situation crushing his chest.

Noah, who had been sitting quietly on a bench nearby, heard the words and instantly jumped to his feet.

"No," Noah gasped, his green eyes widening in absolute panic.

"Lily is my friend, dad, she was the one who told you about the star on my dog!"

"You cannot let them hurt her, you have to save her right now!"

Adrian pulled his son into a desperate hug, his mind racing faster than it ever had in his entire life.

He could not let innocent people die for his family, but he also knew Dragov would never leave any witnesses alive.
