Chapter 10 - The Light Returns

The morning sun was shining brightly as the Caldwell helicopter landed on the lawn of the Charleston estate.
It was the first sunny day after weeks of relentless, brutal autumn rain.
Adrian stepped out of the helicopter, holding the door open for the tall fourteen-year-old boy.
Noah stepped onto the green grass, looking up at the massive mansion that he had completely forgotten.
Inside the house, Grace the maid was waiting in the grand hallway with little Lily.
Lily smiled brightly when she saw the boy from the orphanage walking through the front doors.
Noah smiled back, mouthing a quiet thank you to the little girl who had saved his life.
Adrian placed a gentle hand on his son’s shoulder and guided him toward the sunroom at the back of the house.
Claire Caldwell was sitting in her wheelchair by the window, staring blankly out at the gardens.
She had not spoken a single coherent word in over three years.
Adrian walked softly into the room, crouching down beside his wife's chair.
"Claire," Adrian whispered, taking her fragile, cold hand into his own.
"I brought someone home."
Claire slowly turned her head, her dull eyes moving from Adrian to the tall boy standing in the doorway.
She blinked once, and then a massive, violent shudder ripped through her entire body.
The fog of grief that had trapped her mind for a decade instantly vanished.
She looked at the boy's dark hair, his stance, and those bright green eyes that perfectly mirrored her own.
"Noah," she gasped, her voice raspy and broken from years of silence.
Noah rushed across the room, falling to his knees and burying his face in his mother's lap.
Claire wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his hair and sobbing with unimaginable joy.
Adrian stood up, wrapping his arms around both of them, his family finally whole again.

The grandfather clock in the hallway continued to tick, but it was no longer a countdown of sorrow.
It was the beginning of the rest of their lives.
