Chapter 34 - The Morning After the Storm

The gale blew itself out by midnight, leaving behind a crisp, diamond-bright Sunday morning where the sky was a piercing, cloudless blue and the air smelled sharply of brine, wet pine, and ozone.

We walked down to the lower cove together, inspecting the debris washed ashore by the high tide: tangled kelp, smooth driftwood, and broken shells. Maisie, our golden retriever, bounded ahead of us, barking joyfully at the retreating surf.

Adrien stopped near a large pool trapped in the rocks, poking at a piece of bleached driftwood with his boot. “Look at that,” he pointed to a cluster of small starfish clinging stubbornly to the underside of a rock ledge. “Survived forty-foot waves without moving an inch.”

“Stubbornness runs in families,” I teased, nudging his shoulder with mine.

Adrien laughed, catching my hand and lacing his fingers through mine. The contrast between the dark, violent history we had left behind and this brilliant, salt-washed reality still felt staggering. We had built a fortress not of concrete and armed guards, but of peace, loyalty, and unconditional love.

“Let’s walk out to the point,” Adrien suggested, looking down the rocky coastline where the lighthouse stood sentinel against the blinding blue of the horizon.

We spent the next two hours walking the cliffs, the wind whipping our hair, completely unbothered by time, obligations, or shadows.
