Chapter 26 - The Salt-Washed Morning

The Thursday morning sun climbed higher over the rocky cliffs, burning away the lingering mist and transforming the Atlantic into a vast, brilliant sheet of sapphire. Down in our private cove, the receding tide left behind a world of glistening stone, shallow emerald pools, and the clean, sharp scent of salt spray mixed with damp earth.

I sat on a flat granite boulder near the high-water mark, a thick woolen blanket draped over my shoulders, watching the seagulls wheeling gracefully against the bright sky. The transformation of our lives—from the suffocating, paranoid tension of Manhattan high-rises and syndicate boardrooms to this boundless, roaring coast—still felt like a miracle I had to touch every day to believe.

Footsteps crunched softly on the pebbled path behind me. Adrien appeared, carrying two insulated mugs of dark, steaming coffee. He wore a simple navy fisherman's sweater, the cuffs pushed up to his forearms, the harsh lines of his former life entirely smoothed away by the tranquil rhythm of the sea.

“Morning, Evelyn,” Adrien greeted softly, his deep voice carrying easily over the sound of the surf. He handed me one of the mugs, the warmth radiating instantly into my chilled fingers, before leaning back against the boulder beside me.

I took a slow sip, letting the rich coffee warm me from the inside out. “I was just thinking about how quiet the world is out here, Adrien. Back in the city, every morning started with a crisis report or a security breach. Here, the only emergency is figuring out whether the tide is coming in or going out.”

Adrien smiled, his gray eyes catching the brilliant reflection of the ocean. “We traded shadows for sunlight, Evelyn. It took everything we had to reach this shore, but I’d burn down a thousand empires again if it meant ending up right here with you.”

I turned, resting my head against his shoulder as we watched the waves roll in, knowing that every storm we had survived had only anchored us deeper into this sanctuary.
