Chapter 32 - The Unbroken Horizon

Sunday morning broke with a sky washed brilliantly clean by the previous day’s rain. The air was crisp, the grass in the lower field vibrantly green, and the ocean sparkling like scattered diamonds under the midday sun.
We spent the afternoon walking down to the rocky shore of our private cove, exploring the tide pools that formed among the granite boulders at low tide. We found tiny sea anemones, polished sea glass, and smooth stones worn round by centuries of relentless waves.
Adrien rolled up his sleeves, crouching down by a clear pool of water to inspect a small green crab scuttling beneath a kelp frond, looking more like an enthusiastic boy on a coastal holiday than a man who had once commanded the most feared syndicate network in the Northeast.
I stood a few feet away, watching him with a quiet, overwhelming sense of gratitude swelling in my chest.
He stood up, brushing off his hands, and walked over to me, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me against his chest.
“Happy, Evelyn?” he asked softly, his gray eyes searching mine.
I smiled, my dark eyes shining with absolute, unshakeable peace. I reached up, my fingers tracing the line of his jaw, feeling the solid, living reality of the man who had walked through hell to build a heaven by the sea.

“Every single day, Adrien,” I answered, my voice ringing clear and strong against the crashing surf. “Every single day.”
And as the Atlantic waves broke endlessly against the ancient rocks below, our story continued to unfold—quiet, unbreakable, and entirely our own.
