Chapter 29 - The Evening on the Bluff

As evening approached, the sky over the Atlantic dissolved into a breathtaking palette of bruised purple, burning orange, and deep, liquid gold. The sun dipped slowly toward the horizon, casting long, dramatic shadows across the rolling lawns and the rugged cliffs of our estate.

Adrien and I walked out onto the wraparound wooden deck of the master suite, wrapped in heavy wool blankets against the evening chill. We leaned against the railing, watching the lighthouse in the distance flash its steady, reassuring beacon across the dark water.

“Do you ever think about the city?” I asked quietly, the question hanging in the crisp night air like a ghost from another lifetime.

Adrien was silent for a long moment, his gaze fixed on the horizon where the dark ocean met the darkening sky. When he spoke, his voice was steady and absolute.

“Only when I want to remind myself how far we’ve traveled,” Adrien answered, turning to look at me. “The city was a cage made of glass and steel. Every success was bought with blood, and every ally was a potential executioner. Out here... the only things that judge us are the tides.”

I leaned into his side, feeling the solid, living warmth of his body. “We won, Adrien. We actually won.”

“We didn't just win, Evelyn,” he whispered, pulling me tighter against his chest. “We escaped. And we built a sanctuary that nothing in this world can touch.”

Below us, the Atlantic waves crashed rhythmically against the granite boulders, a timeless, unyielding heartbeat that echoed the peace settling deep into our bones. There were no alerts on our phones, no armed guards at the gates, and no shadows waiting in the corridors. There was only the wind, the sea, and the endless, beautiful horizon of tomorrow.
