Chapter 14 - The Evening Tide

As dusk approached, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of violet, burnt orange, and deep indigo, Adrien and Evelyn walked down the narrow, winding dirt path that led from their back porch down to the rocky shore of the private cove.
The tide was rolling in, sending powerful white waves crashing against the massive granite boulders that guarded the inlet. The air was cool and sharp, carrying the briny scent of seaweed and cold ocean water.
Evelyn wore a thick wool fisherman’s sweater over her jeans, her hands shoved deep into her pockets as she stepped carefully across the uneven stones. Adrien walked closely beside her, his hand resting securely at the small of her back, guiding her over the slick patches of wet rock with natural, protective vigilance.
They reached a wide, flat ledge overlooking the churning waters, sitting down side by side as the last rays of sunlight dipped below the distant tree line.
“Look,” Evelyn whispered, pointing out toward the horizon where the dark silhouette of a harbor seal broke the surface of the water before gracefully diving back into the rolling swell.
Adrien followed her gaze, smiling as the seal disappeared into the foam. “Looks like we’re not the only ones who appreciate the privacy of this cove.”
“It’s amazing,” Evelyn murmured, pulling her knees up to her chest and resting her chin on her arms. “For years, I felt like every breath I took was monitored, every decision calculated, and every relationship transactional. Here, the ocean doesn't care who you were, what your last name is, or how much money is in your accounts. It just keeps moving forward.”
“Nature doesn't negotiate,” Adrien agreed quietly, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and pulling her closer against his side to shield her from the evening chill. “It just exists. Pure, unfiltered, and real.”
“And so do we,” Evelyn added, turning her head to look up at him in the fading twilight.

Adrien looked down into her dark eyes, seeing the entire universe reflected in their depths—the pain they had overcome, the loyalty they had forged in the dark, and the boundless future waiting for them across the unbroken horizon.
“Forever,” Adrien whispered, leaning over to kiss her lips softly, tasting the salt of the ocean and the sweet warmth of the evening air.
