Chapter 15 - The Warmth of the Hearth

By the time they climbed back up the winding dirt path from the shore, the night had fully settled over the Maine coast, wrapping the secluded house in a blanket of absolute darkness and brilliant starlight.

Inside, the living room was illuminated only by the roaring fire Adrien had built in the massive stone fireplace earlier that evening. Golden flames danced against the exposed wooden beams, casting a warm, flickering glow across the comfortable armchairs, the woolen rugs, and the stacked bookshelves.

Evelyn knelt by the hearth on a thick woven rug, using a long iron poker to adjust a burning log, sending a shower of bright red sparks up the chimney.

Adrien walked in carrying two mugs of hot spiced cider, setting them down on the low wooden coffee table before sinking down onto the rug right beside her. He pulled her back against his chest, wrapping his arms around her waist as they both stared into the mesmerizing crackle of the fire.

“Penny for your thoughts,” Adrien murmured, his voice a low, soothing vibration against her spine.

“I was just thinking about how terrifying it was to leave New York,” Evelyn confessed quietly, watching the flames lick at the dry birch wood. “I thought that if I walked away from the safety of my old life—as miserable as it was—I would end up completely lost in the dark.”

“Instead, you found your way out of the dark entirely,” Adrien reminded her, kissing the top of her head.

“Instead, I found you,” Evelyn corrected softly, turning in his arms to face him fully, resting her hands against his chest. “Or rather, we found each other when we were both broken beyond repair.”

“We weren't broken, Evelyn,” Adrien said, his gray eyes burning with fierce, unyielding conviction. “We were unmade. And what we built in the wreckage is stronger than anything the old world could ever dream of.”

He reached up, framing her face with his hands, his thumbs gently tracing her cheekbones as he leaned in slowly. Their lips met in a deep, lingering kiss that carried all the weight of their journey—every tear, every victory, every silent promise kept through the storm.

There were no shadows left in the room. There was only the warmth of the hearth, the safety of each other’s arms, and the quiet, miraculous reality of a life truly won.
