Chapter 27 - The Secrets of the Tide Pools

By noon, the sun was high and warm, baking the salt from the granite rocks and turning the air crisp and invigorating. Maisie, our golden retriever puppy, scampered down the path ahead of us, barking happily at the crashing foam before scampering back up the beach in mock terror whenever a wave reached her paws.
Adrien and I walked hand-in-hand down to the lower pools where the water remained crystal clear. Adrien rolled his sleeves up further, crouching down beside a deep rock basin to inspect a cluster of purple sea urchins and tiny, translucent fish darting between strands of golden kelp.
“Look at this one,” Adrien pointed, a genuine, boyish grin breaking across his face. For a man who had once commanded the most feared syndicate network in the Northeast, finding joy in a tidal pool was the ultimate proof of his complete psychological liberation.
I knelt beside him, brushing a damp lock of hair from my eyes. “You’re more fascinated by that crab than you ever were by corporate hostile takeovers.”
“Corporate takeovers were business,” Adrien replied, laughing softly as the small crab scurried under a ledge. “This is life. Real, unfiltered, and entirely disconnected from ledgers and blood money.”

I looked at him—the strong set of his jaw, the faint silver at his temples, the absolute peace etched into his features—and felt a profound, overwhelming wave of love. We had walked through the fire, navigated the wreckage, and built a world of our own design.
Adrien stood up, offering me his hand to help me rise. When I was on my feet, he didn't let go; instead, he pulled me flush against his chest, his arms wrapping securely around my waist. The ocean breeze whipped our hair around us, but in his embrace, the world felt still, warm, and eternally safe.
