Chapter 9 - A Dangerous Proposition

The next few weeks were a blur of legal battles and police statements.

Because of Roman’s massive wealth and influence, the corrupt adoption papers were quietly shredded.

The courts recognized me as the biological mother.

But legally, Roman had no claim to them anymore.

I stood in the nursery, packing my few belongings into a small bag.

Roman walked in, leaning against the doorframe with his hands in his pockets.

He looked nervous, an emotion I had never seen on the billionaire mob boss.

"What are you doing?" he asked quietly.

"I need to find an apartment," I said, avoiding his gaze.

"I can't live in your house forever, Roman."

"You don't have to leave," he said, taking a step closer.

"This is their home."

"They have their toys here, their schedule, their security."

I sighed, zipping up my bag.

"Roman, they are my children."

"I have to raise them."

"I can't rely on a man who isn't even their father."

Roman crossed the room in two strides and gently grabbed my shoulders.

"Biology doesn't make a father," he said fiercely.

"I paced the floors when they had colic."

"I bought them their first shoes."

"I bled to protect them."

He looked deeply into my eyes, his voice softening into a desperate whisper.

"And over the last month, I have fallen completely in love with their mother."

My breath hitched in my throat.

"Stay with me, Pamela," he pleaded.

"Let me take care of you."

"Let me be the father they deserve, and the husband you deserve."

"We can build a real family from the ashes of everything we've lost."

I looked at his scarred, handsome face, and I knew my answer.
