Chapter 4 - The Impossible Truth

Dr. Evans arrived within the hour, looking terrified.
He took swabs from my cheek and from the three sleeping toddlers.
The waiting felt like a physical torture.
Roman poured himself a glass of whiskey, staring out the window into the dark night.
I sat on the edge of a velvet sofa, refusing to let go of the little girl's hand.
Two hours later, the doctor returned to the study holding a printed document.
His hands were trembling.
"Mr. Voss," the doctor started, swallowing hard.
"Give me the paper," Roman snapped, snatching it from his hands.
Roman read the results, his eyes scanning the page quickly.
For a moment, the dangerous billionaire looked completely paralyzed.
He slowly lowered the paper and looked at me.
"A ninety-nine point nine percent match," Roman said, his voice hollow.
"You are their biological mother."
A sob tore out of my throat, loud and jagged.
I fell to my knees, burying my face in my hands.
They were mine.
My babies were alive.
The empty cribs, the endless tears, the agonizing visits to a fake grave—it had all been a lie.
Roman walked over and crouched down in front of me.
"Who was your doctor?" he asked, his voice deadly calm.
"Dr. Aris," I choked out. "At Mercy General."
Roman stood up and looked at Donovan, who was waiting in the shadows.
"Find Dr. Aris," Roman commanded.
"Don't kill him."
"Bring him to the warehouse."
Roman looked back down at me, offering his hand.
"I paid for these children, Pamela, which makes me a victim of this fraud as well."

"But nobody steals from a mother and gets away with it in my city."
"We are going to burn their world to the ground."
