Chapter 5 - The Interrogation

The warehouse smelled of rust and cold concrete.
I insisted on coming with Roman, despite his objections.
I needed to see the man who had ruined my life.
Dr. Aris was tied to a metal chair in the center of the room.
His face was bruised, and he was sweating profusely.
When he saw me walk in beside Roman, all the color drained from his face.
"Pamela," he whimpered. "I'm so sorry."
I wanted to scream, to hit him, but my voice was completely cold.
"Why did you do it?" I asked.
Roman stood behind me, a silent, terrifying shadow.
"I was in debt," Dr. Aris cried, pulling at his restraints.
"A broker approached me."
"They said a billionaire was willing to pay a fortune for triplets, but they couldn't find a surrogate in time."
"When you came in for the emergency delivery, you were alone."
"No family in the waiting room."
"No husband."
"You were the perfect target."
My stomach lurched as the brutal reality of his words sank in.
Because I was poor and alone, he decided my children were free for the taking.
"We put you under heavy anesthesia," he continued, sobbing.
"I delivered them, handed them out the back door to the broker, and printed the death certificates."
Roman stepped forward, pulling a silver gun from his shoulder holster.
"Who is the broker?" Roman asked quietly.
"The Genesis Syndicate," Dr. Aris stammered in terror.
"They deal in high-level black-market adoptions for the elite."
Roman lowered his gun, but his eyes were filled with murder.
"You have five minutes to give Donovan every name, every location, and every bank account associated with them."
"If you lie, I will make sure you wish you had died tonight."
Roman turned to me and gently touched my arm.
May you like
"Let's go home, Pamela."
For the first time in my life, standing next to a mob boss, I felt entirely safe.
