Chapter 8 - The Syndicate's Fall

We stayed in the panic room for four agonizing hours.

The children eventually fell asleep, exhausted by the fear and the crying.

I sat in the dim light, staring at the steel door, imagining the worst.

Suddenly, the green light on the locking mechanism flashed.

The door hissed and slowly swung open.

Roman stood there, covered in dust and blood, breathing heavily.

He dropped a tactical rifle to the floor and leaned against the doorframe.

"It's over," he said, his voice raspy.

I scrambled to my feet, gently laying the sleeping babies on a cot.

I ran to him and threw my arms around his neck.

Roman stiffened for a moment, unaccustomed to the embrace, before wrapping his strong arms tightly around my waist.

"Are you hurt?" I asked, pulling back to inspect a cut on his cheek.

"It's not my blood," he replied flatly.

"Donovan raided the clinic while they were attacking us here."

"We wiped out their entire leadership."

"The Genesis Syndicate no longer exists."

"The authorities are recovering the remaining stolen children right now."

Tears of relief streamed down my face.

"Thank you," I sobbed, burying my face in his chest.

"You saved us."

Roman lifted my chin, forcing me to look into his dark eyes.

"You saved me, Pamela."

"I was a dead man walking before you and these children brought light back into my life."

He gently wiped a tear from my cheek with his thumb.

May you like

"No one will ever hurt you again."

"I swear it on my life."
