Chapter 7 - Under Siege

We ran down the long, opulent hallways as the sound of assault rifles echoed from the foyer.

The children were crying in terror, burying their faces against us.

"Don't look back, Pamela!" Roman shouted over the deafening noise.

We reached the library, and Roman kicked open a hidden panel in the bookshelf.

Behind it was a heavy steel door with a biometric scanner.

He pressed his hand to it, and the door hissed open.

He pushed me inside and handed me the two boys.

"Stay here," Roman commanded, his eyes blazing with protective fury.

"The walls are reinforced steel."

"There is food, water, and a communication line to Donovan."

"What about you?" I panicked, grabbing his sleeve.

"I am going to kill every single man who dared to fire a weapon near my children," he said coldly.

"Our children," I corrected him without thinking.

Roman paused, the anger in his eyes softening for just a fraction of a second.

He leaned down and kissed my forehead, a surprising gesture of tenderness amidst the chaos.

"I will come back for you."

"Lock the door."

He stepped out, and the heavy steel door slid shut, plunging us into the quiet safety of the bunker.

I huddled on the floor with Leo, Max, and Mia, wrapping my arms around all three of them.

Through the thick walls, I could feel the faint vibrations of explosions and gunfire.

I prayed to whatever God was listening to protect the dangerous man outside.

Because despite who he was, Roman Voss was fighting for our family.
