Chapter 5 - The Condo Trap

While Daniel was experiencing the total destruction of his corporate career, I sat in Rebecca Shaw’s sunlit downtown office.

Natalie sat beside me on the plush velvet sofa, sipping an iced latte and reviewing real estate documents.

Rebecca tapped a polished acrylic nail against a large architectural blueprint spread across her conference table.

"Your husband is a remarkably sloppy thief, Rachel," Rebecca smiled, her sharp eyes gleaming with professional satisfaction.

"Where did the two hundred and forty thousand dollars go?" I asked, keeping my voice calm and collected.

"He transferred the funds into a dummy LLC called 'Horizon Bay Properties,'" Rebecca explained, turning a document toward me.

"The LLC is registered under the name of Claire Halstead’s younger brother, Tyler."

"And they used that exact sum as a cash down payment on a luxury pre-construction condominium in Boston’s Back Bay."

Natalie let out a low whistle, shaking her head in sheer disbelief.

"He bought his mistress’s family a luxury condo using your joint retirement money?" Natalie asked, horrified.

"He thought he was being clever by keeping his name off the public deed," Rebecca replied.

"He assumed that if his name wasn't on the deed, you couldn't touch the property in a divorce."

Rebecca pulled a stamped legal document from her briefcase and slid it across the table.

"What is this?" I inquired, examining the heavy court seal.

"This is a formal Lis Pendens notice and an emergency constructive trust petition," Rebecca announced proudly.

"We have legally attached a fraudulent conveyance lien to the Back Bay condo."

"Because the down payment was made with stolen marital funds, the entire property is frozen under a judicial hold."

"Claire’s brother cannot sell it, cannot refinance it, and the developer cannot release the keys."

At that exact moment across town, Daniel arrived at the Back Bay construction sales office in a cheap taxi.

He was desperate for a place to sleep, having been locked out of our joint accounts and his office.

Claire’s brother, Tyler, met him on the sidewalk outside the luxury development, looking furious.

"Get away from me, Daniel!" Tyler shouted, pushing Daniel back when he tried to step toward the entrance.

"Tyler, I paid for that condo! I need the temporary access key!" Daniel yelled frantically.

"The sheriff just served me with a fraud lawsuit because of your stolen money!" Tyler yelled back, drawing stares from pedestrians.

"My bank accounts are audited, my credit is ruined, and the developer is threatening to cancel the contract!"

Tyler shoved Daniel onto the concrete sidewalk, sending his expensive briefcase skittering into the gutter.

"If you ever come near me or my sister again, I will break your neck," Tyler threatened before storming inside.

Daniel sat on the cold Boston pavement, looking at his scuffed leather shoes, completely and utterly homeless.
