Chapter 14 - The Silent Alarm

I sat in my corner office the next morning, sipping a hot espresso while looking at the digital security logs.
Natalie paced back and forth across the plush carpet, her arms crossed tightly over her chest.
"I cannot believe he actually did it," Natalie fumed, her eyes blazing with protective anger.
"He committed federal wire fraud and corporate espionage just for a quick payday from Claire."
I turned my monitor toward Natalie, showing her the exact digital footprint Daniel had left behind.
"He thinks he stole our valuation algorithms for the Vanguard merger," I explained, my voice completely calm.
"But what did he actually download, Rachel?" Natalie asked, stopping her pacing to look at the screen.
"He downloaded a mirrored directory that I personally coded three weeks ago when I saw Claire's name on the manifest," I smiled.
"The files contain highly realistic, mathematically sound data that is fundamentally flawed at its core."
"If Claire presents those numbers to the board, she won't just lose the contract."
"She will accidentally expose her husband's firm to a multi-billion dollar SEC investigation for market manipulation."
Natalie let out a low, impressed whistle, sinking into the leather guest chair.
"You turned him into a Trojan Horse," she whispered, realizing the absolute genius of the trap.
I nodded, looking out the window at the bustling city streets below.
Daniel and Claire had always believed they were the smartest people in every single room they entered.
Their arrogance was their greatest weapon, but it was also their most fatal, blinding weakness.
I picked up my office phone and dialed the direct number for my private cybersecurity investigator.
"Track the malware beacon embedded in the flash drive," I ordered quietly into the receiver.

"I want video surveillance of the exact moment Daniel hands that drive over to Claire."
I hung up the phone, feeling the final pieces of the chessboard locking seamlessly into place.
