Chapter 12 - The Desperate Pawn

Across the city, Daniel Whitmore was sitting in a dim, greasy diner during his unpaid thirty-minute lunch break.
His life had become a suffocating loop of endless debt, cheap instant noodles, and mind-numbing data entry.
He stared blankly at his cracked smartphone screen, checking his bank balance which was currently overdrawn by forty dollars.
The bell above the diner door jingled, but Daniel didn't bother to look up from his stale black coffee.
A heavy wave of expensive, cloying perfume washed over his small booth.
Daniel raised his head slowly, his bloodshot eyes widening in absolute shock.
Claire was standing over him, wearing a white designer trench coat and holding a three-thousand-dollar leather handbag.
She looked down at his frayed shirt collar and exhausted face with a mixture of pity and intense disgust.
She slid into the booth across from him, not bothering to remove her expensive silk gloves.
"You look absolutely pathetic, Daniel," Claire stated coldly, her perfectly painted red lips curving into a cruel smirk.
Daniel felt a surge of humiliated rage, but he was too tired and broken to even raise his voice.
"What do you want, Claire?" he muttered, staring down at his trembling hands.
"I want to make a business transaction with you," she replied, pulling a thick manila envelope from her bag.
She dropped it onto the sticky diner table, the heavy thud indicating it was filled with something substantial.
"There is fifty thousand dollars in untraceable cash inside that envelope," Claire whispered, leaning forward.
Daniel’s breath hitched in his throat, his eyes locking onto the brown paper as if it were a life raft.
"I need the proprietary algorithmic models Rachel is using for the Vanguard merger," Claire demanded quietly.
"I know you still remember the backdoor passwords to her legacy cloud servers from when you shared a home network."
Daniel hesitated, knowing that accessing those servers was a direct violation of state and federal cybersecurity laws.

But as he looked at the envelope, he realized this was his only ticket out of his miserable, impoverished existence.
He slowly reached across the table, his greedy fingers pulling the envelope into his lap.
