Chapter 1 - The Midnight Discovery

The dark Boston streets blurred past the passenger window as Natalie accelerated onto the highway.

Inside the car, the silence was calm and steady, a total contrast to the storm I had just left behind.

I looked down at my bare left ring finger, where a pale white indentation marked ten years of absolute devotion.

For a decade, I had protected Daniel Whitmore from the consequences of his own laziness and arrogance.

I had managed his schedules, balanced his checkbooks, tolerated his demanding family, and built our shared wealth from nothing.

And he had repaid me by canceling our tenth anniversary dinner because his twenty-nine-year-old mistress threw a jealous tantrum.

Across town, in our quiet suburban neighborhood, Daniel’s headlights swept across our empty driveway at 11:15 p.m.

He had spent three hours at Claire’s luxury apartment, drinking wine and reassuring her that his wife meant nothing to him.

He unlocked the heavy front door, expecting to find me sitting on the couch in tears, waiting for an explanation.

Instead, the house was pitch black and dead silent.

He flipped the entryway light switch, tossing his keys onto the console table.

"Rachel?" he called out, his voice casual, expecting an obedient reply from the upstairs bedroom.

No answer came.

He walked into the kitchen to pour a glass of water, and that was when his eyes landed on the marble island.

Under the pendant light sat my platinum diamond wedding band.

Beside the ring lay the crisp white note bearing four simple words in black ink.

You chose. So did I.

Daniel’s chest tightened, a sudden spike of nervous irritation breaking through his alcohol-induced confidence.

He rushed up the stairs and threw open our master bedroom door.

The navy-blue anniversary dress still hung on the outside of the wardrobe, a mocking reminder of the evening he had ruined.

The closet was half empty, stripped clean of my clothes, my shoes, and my personal documents.

He pulled out his phone with shaking hands and dialed my number for the fourth time.

The mechanical voice answered instantly, informing him that the cellular subscriber was unavailable.

Daniel let out a harsh, bitter laugh in the empty bedroom, running a hand through his styled hair.

"She is just being dramatic," he muttered aloud to himself, refusing to admit the terrifying truth.

"She has nowhere to go, and she will be back by tomorrow morning to apologize."

He truly believed he was the prize in our marriage.

He had no idea that while he was pacing our bedroom, my attorney was already loading the legal cannons.
