Chapter 16 - The Gala Confrontation

Friday evening arrived, bringing with it the most exclusive corporate charity gala of the Boston social season.
The grand ballroom of the plaza hotel was filled with billionaires, politicians, and industry titans.
I wore a stunning, floor-length midnight blue gown, standing confidently near the center of the room with Natalie.
We were surrounded by a circle of potential clients, charming them with our industry insights and graceful humor.
From across the ballroom, the crowd parted slightly as Claire made her grand entrance.
She was dripping in expensive diamonds, clinging tightly to the arm of her older husband, Gregory Vance.
She spotted me immediately, her eyes narrowing with a toxic mixture of jealousy and absolute triumph.
She let go of her husband's arm and marched directly toward my circle of investors, intending to cause a scene.
"Rachel, darling, how quaint to see you here," Claire announced loudly, drawing the attention of everyone nearby.
"I am surprised you had the courage to show your face tonight."
I turned around slowly, holding my crystal champagne flute with perfectly steady hands.
"Hello, Claire," I replied calmly, my voice projecting effortless elegance.
"I hear your firm is struggling to put together a cohesive pitch for the tech merger."
Claire let out a sharp, arrogant laugh, pulling a sleek digital tablet from her designer clutch.
"Struggling? Oh, honey, we aren't struggling," Claire gloated, holding the screen up for the investors to see.
"In fact, we have developed a predictive algorithm so brilliant, it makes your entire firm look completely obsolete."
She was publicly displaying the stolen data, convinced she was humiliating me in front of the city's elite.
"Is that so?" I asked, taking a deliberate step closer to her.
"It is," she sneered. "We are presenting this data to the acquisition board on Monday, and your little boutique firm is finished."
May you like
I smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that made Claire visually falter for a split second.
"I wouldn't wait until Monday, Claire," I whispered softly. "I think you should look at the final page of that report right now."
