Chapter 19 - The Deposition of Ruin

Three months later, I sat in a massive federal courtroom, wearing a sharp, tailored white suit.

I was there as the prosecution's star witness in the United States versus Daniel Whitmore and Claire Vance.

Daniel sat at the defense table, wearing a bright orange prison jumpsuit, looking utterly hollowed out.

His hair was entirely gray, his posture was hunched, and he wouldn't even lift his eyes to look at me.

Claire sat at the opposite end of the table, looking pale, exhausted, and stripped of all her artificial glamour.

The federal prosecutor displayed the server logs, the security footage, and the financial tracking data on a large projector.

The evidence was so overwhelming and undeniable that the jury didn't even need to deliberate for long.

When the verdict was read, the word "Guilty" echoed loudly through the silent, mahogany courtroom.

The judge looked down at the two defendants with an expression of severe, uncompromising judgment.

"Corporate espionage and intentional financial sabotage strike at the very heart of our economic system," the judge stated.

"Daniel Whitmore, I sentence you to twelve years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of early parole."

Daniel collapsed into his chair, burying his face in his chained hands and weeping loudly.

"Claire Vance, for orchestrating this conspiracy and attempting to flee federal jurisdiction, I sentence you to fifteen years."

Claire didn't cry; she simply stared blankly ahead, completely broken by the reality of her new, horrific future.

As the bailiffs moved in to escort them away, Daniel suddenly turned his head, locking eyes with me.

He mouthed the words, "I'm sorry," tears streaming freely down his ruined, aged face.

I didn't smile, I didn't frown, and I didn't offer him a single ounce of forgiveness.

I simply stood up, adjusted my blazer, and walked out of the courtroom without looking back.

My past was finally dead and buried, locked away in a concrete cell where it could never hurt me again.
