Chapter 9 - THE TENSION BUILDS

A week after the wedding, Gabriel and Emma were preparing for a family trip to Gabriel’s private villa in Amalfi, Italy—a trip intended to serve as both a honeymoon and a celebration of Lily's incredible recovery.

The estate was bustling with activity as staff packed luggage and security personnel ran final checks on the armored SUVs that would transport the family to the private airport terminal.

Gabriel was in his study, reviewing final travel documents, when Marco entered, looking unusually tense.

"Boss," Marco said, closing the door behind him. "Our contacts at the federal harbor division just flagged a suspicious manifest."

Gabriel raised an eyebrow. "What kind of manifest?"

"A shipping container originating from Palermo, Sicily, arrived two days ago," Marco explained, setting a paper on the desk. "It was declared as luxury Italian tile, but the consignee address was a shell company previously tied to Don Carmine Falcone."

Gabriel’s instincts, forged through decades of survival, immediately flared. "Carmine is in a maximum-security prison. He shouldn't have the resources to move heavy freight from Sicily."

"That's what worries me," Marco admitted. "We sent a team to inspect the warehouse where the container was delivered. The warehouse was completely empty. But our sniffer dogs picked up traces of military-grade plastic explosives and high-frequency surveillance jamming equipment."

Gabriel stood up, his jaw clenching. The peaceful life he had fought so hard to build was suddenly under threat once again.

"They aren't targeting my business," Gabriel realized instantly. "Carmine knows my business is already liquidated or transferred. He's coming after my family."

"Should we cancel the trip to Italy?" Marco asked.

Gabriel thought rapidly. If they stayed at the estate, they were sitting ducks for a coordinated military-style attack. If they traveled, they were vulnerable in transit.

"No," Gabriel said firmly. "We proceed with the trip, but we change the route. We take the secondary armored convoy, and we leave two hours ahead of schedule. Let them attack an empty ghost convoy if that's their plan."

Downstairs, Emma was putting the finishing touches on the girls' travel bags. She walked into the nursery, where Lily was sitting on the floor, playing happily with a toy airplane.

Suddenly, Lily stopped playing. She looked up at the window, her hazel eyes widening.

"Emma?" Lily said, her small voice filled with sudden uneasiness. "Red light on the tree."

Emma frowned, walking over to the window. She peered through the glass into the autumn trees bordering the estate garden. High up in the branches of a giant oak tree, a tiny, pulsing red light was blinking—a laser rangefinder from a long-range sniper scope.

Emma’s heart stopped.

"Get down!" Emma screamed, lunging forward and grabbing Lily and Sophia, pulling them both beneath the heavy wooden study desk just as a high-powered armor-piercing round shattered the triple-paned bulletproof glass of the nursery window.
