Chapter 4 - UNEXPOSED DANGERS

The air in the room hung heavy with tension. Emma gripped the back of a nursery chair, her knuckles turning white as she processed Gabriel's warning. The past she had spent over a decade trying to outrun had finally caught up with her, right in the heart of the safest mansion in the city.
"What do they want from me?" Emma whispered, her voice trembling. "I'm just a maid. I don't know anything about my father's old work."
"They don't care about what you know," Gabriel explained calmly, taking a step back to give her space. "They care about leverage. They know you work in my house, close to my daughters. Don Falcone believes he can threaten your mother in the hospital or threaten your life to force you to open my doors from the inside."
Emma gasped, clutching her chest. "My mother... oh God, if they touch her..."
"My men are already at the hospital," Gabriel reassured her, his tone leaving no room for doubt. "As of ten minutes ago, your mother was moved to a private floor under twenty-four-hour armed guard by my personal security detail. No one gets near her without my clearance."
Emma looked at him, overwhelmed by the sudden shield of protection this formidable man had placed around her family. "Why would you do that for me?"
"Because you did something for my daughter that no amount of money could buy," Gabriel replied simply. "And in my world, loyalty and care are repaid with absolute protection."
Over the next two weeks, the atmosphere inside the Moretti mansion underwent a subtle transformation. While the tension with the Falcone family simmered in the background, inside the home, warmth began to bloom.
Emma continued her daily routine, but her role naturally expanded. With Gabriel's approval, she replaced the cold clinical sessions with playful, structured movements. She turned physical therapy into games. She placed colorful ribbons across the carpet, encouraging Lily to "step over the magical rivers." She played upbeat classical music, dancing lightly with Sophia while holding Lily’s hands to help her balance.
Gabriel found himself spending more time at home. Instead of staying trapped in his office until midnight, he began coming down to the playroom in the late afternoons.
One afternoon, as rain tapped against the glass, Gabriel sat on the floor with both of his daughters. Sophia was busy building a tower of blocks, while Lily was attempting to walk from the sofa to where Gabriel sat—a distance of nearly six feet.
"Come on, my little flower," Gabriel whispered, holding his wide hands out, inches from the carpet.
Lily wobbled, her small legs shaking under her weight. She looked back at Emma, who was kneeling a few feet behind her, smiling encouragingly.
"You can do it, Lily," Emma cheered softly. "Reach for Daddy."
Lily took a deep breath, lifted her right leg with deliberate effort, and took a step forward. Then another. And another. On the fourth step, her knee buckled, but instead of falling to the floor, she tumbled forward straight into Gabriel’s waiting arms.
Gabriel scooped her up, pulling her close to his chest. Lily let out a bright, ringing laugh—a sound so full of pure joy that Gabriel squeezed his eyes shut, fighting back emotion.
"You did it," Gabriel whispered into her chestnut hair. "You reached me."
He looked up and caught Emma watching them. Her brown eyes were shimmering with happy tears, a tender smile lighting up her face. In that quiet moment, as their eyes met across the room, an unspoken connection flared between them—a silent understanding forged from shared pain, protection, and deep affection for the little girls.
However, the peace was shattered late that evening.
At 11:00 PM, Gabriel received an urgent call on his encrypted line. It was Marco.
"Boss, we have a breach," Marco said, his voice tense. "Not at the mansion—at your dockside warehouse on Pier 42. A fire just broke out. It's arson. Falcone’s signature."
Gabriel’s eyes hardened into flint. "Is it a distraction?"
"We're checking perimeter feeds around the house now, but it looks like they want to draw you away from the mansion to handle the port authority," Marco reported.
Gabriel looked at the security monitors in his room. The house was quiet. The girls were sleeping, and Emma was in her staff quarters on the wing.
"I'll go to the pier," Gabriel decided, his tactical mind taking over. "Leave half the security detail here. Lock down the estate gates. No one enters or leaves until I return."
As Gabriel hurried down the corridor toward the private garage, he passed Emma, who had woken up from the commotion.
"Gabriel?" she called out softly, using his first name for the first time without realizing it. "Is everything okay?"
Gabriel stopped, looking at her in the dim hallway light. He felt an overwhelming urge to pull her close, to keep her safe.
"I have to handle a problem at the docks," Gabriel said firmly. "The house is on lockdown. Stay inside the nursery with the girls until I get back. Do you understand me?"
Emma nodded, sensing the gravity of the situation. "Be careful."

Gabriel turned and disappeared into the shadows. But as his black sedan sped toward the burning docks, a dark realization struck him like a physical blow. The arson at the pier was too obvious. Don Falcone didn't just want to draw Gabriel away—he wanted to test the estate's response time.
And back at the mansion, a shadowed figure was already cutting the main power lines.
