Chapter 2 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

Gabriel stood frozen in his study, the monitor casting a harsh blue glow across his muscular, tattooed arms. His eyes narrowed onto the small, dark ink mark visible on the back of Emma’s neck before her collar shifted back into place. A storm of suspicion, rage, and confusion instantly eclipsed the warmth he had felt just seconds ago watching his daughter walk.
Was Emma Brooks an assassin? A mole sent by Don Falcone to poison his children or gather intelligence on his logistics routes? Or was this something far more sinister?
He slammed his hand on his desk and summoned his head of security, Marco, a scarred veteran who had served the Moretti family for two decades.
"Marco," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into the terrifying, icy register that made grown men tremble. "Pull Emma Brooks's file again. Every background check, every former address, every bank transaction. And run her fingerprints through our private criminal database. I want to know who she really is before sunrise."
Marco frowned, picking up on the sudden tension. "Did she do something to the girls, Boss?"
"Just get it done," Gabriel commanded.
While Marco worked through the night, Gabriel remained in his office, unable to sleep. He replayed the camera footage over and over. He watched Emma’s face as she encouraged Lily. There was no malice in those warm brown eyes. There was no deceit in the way she gently clapped when Lily took those four fragile steps. But Gabriel had lived in the mob long enough to know that the most dangerous enemies were the ones who wore the sweetest smiles.
By 6:00 AM, Marco knocked on the heavy mahogany door. He held a thick manila folder.
"Boss," Marco said gravely. "You were right to be suspicious. Emma Brooks isn't her real name. Or rather, it's her maiden name, but her family background was buried deep."
Gabriel leaned forward, his knuckles white. "Explain."
"Her late father was Thomas Brooks, a low-level accountant who worked for the Falcone syndicate fifteen years ago," Marco revealed, opening the file. "When Thomas discovered Falcone was embezzling from his own men and threatening civilians, he tried to go to the authorities. Falcone had him killed in a staged car accident. Emma was only fifteen at the time. To mark her family as 'tainted' and ensure they never stepped out of line, Falcone’s enforcers forcibly branded her with their crest when she turned eighteen."
Gabriel felt a sudden shift in his chest. "A brand... not a loyalty tattoo."
"A brand," Marco confirmed. "She fled New York right after, changed her life, became a teacher. But six months ago, her mother fell ill with advanced spinal cancer. The medical bills piled up. She returned to the city under her maiden name, taking whatever domestic work paid enough to keep her mother in hospice care. She applied here because the salary you offered was the only thing that could cover the treatments."
Gabriel looked back at the screen. The morning light was beginning to trickle through the mansion's tall windows. Down in the kitchen, Emma was already awake, quietly preparing fresh fruit bowls for the girls and heating milk. Her hands moved with gentle efficiency, her expression tired but deeply caring.
She wasn't a spy sent to destroy his family. She was a survivor carrying the scars of the very monster Gabriel was fighting.
Yet, a new dread washed over Gabriel. If the Falcones ever discovered that the daughter of the accountant they betrayed was working inside the Moretti compound, they would use her—or kill her—to get to him.
Suddenly, the security alarm on Gabriel’s desk chimed softly. A silent motion sensor at the perimeter gate had been tripped.
Gabriel zoomed in on the external camera feeds. A black SUV with tinted windows was idling on the quiet street outside his estate's iron gates. Inside the vehicle, Gabriel recognized the silhouette of Frankie Falcone—the sadistic nephew of Don Falcone.

Frankie was holding a long-lens camera, aiming it directly at the second-story playroom window where Emma was currently setting down Lily’s breakfast tray.
The Falcones already knew she was here.
