Chapter 1 - THE EYES IN THE DARK

The cameras were not supposed to make Gabriel Moretti cry. They were supposed to protect his twin daughters, Sophia and Lily.

Following the sudden death of his wife two years prior, Gabriel—a forty-one-year-old mafia boss who controlled New York’s shipping ports and darkunderbelly—had turned his cold marble mansion into a fortress. He feared his underworld enemies, but even more, he feared his own powerlessness. While Sophia was a wild, healthy two-year-old who treated the estate like her personal kingdom, her twin sister Lily was quiet, reserved, and born with nerve damage in her right leg.

Dozens of high-priced physical therapists had come and gone, wearing clinical smiles and squeaky shoes, forcing Lily through painful exercises that left the little girl sobbing and withdrawn. Seeing his child shrink away in frustration broke Gabriel’s heart, hardening his exterior even further.

To ensure absolute security without violating court-mandated privacy laws, Gabriel’s attorney, Jonathan Hail, insisted on installing hidden, high-definition security cameras in all common areas. Gabriel could watch live feeds directly from his private study—a dark room of polished black granite, fine whiskey, and heavy monitors.

Then came Emma Brooks.

Emma was a thirty-year-old woman with soft brown eyes and a full, curvy frame she carried with quiet dignity. Hired strictly as a maid to perform household chores, she had no formal medical credentials, only a warm heart, years of experience as a former preschool teacher, and a desperate need to support her ailing mother.

Gabriel warned her during her interview: "You are here to clean and assist. The children have specialists." Emma had simply nodded and replied, "I know the difference between what a job title says and what a house actually needs."

On a rainy Thursday night, Gabriel sat in his dimly lit office, pouring two fingers of amber bourbon. He leaned forward, glancing at the wall-mounted surveillance feed that showed the expansive glass living room. The lights were dimmed, and the high-end specialists had all left for the evening.

Suddenly, Gabriel froze.

On the screen, Emma wasn't sweeping or dusting. She had quietly moved the heavy coffee table out of the way. She knelt down on the plush rug, opening her arms wide. Beside her, little Sophia was clapping furiously, cheering her sister on.

And then Gabriel saw Lily.

The two-year-old girl was standing inside her metallic training frame. But instead of crying or resisting as she always did with the doctors, Lily had a radiant, excited smile on her face. Emma wasn't shouting commands or forcing clinical movements. She was singing a soft, playful melody, wiggling her shoulders, and whispering words Gabriel couldn't hear through the silent video feed.

Lily leaned forward. Her small hands gripped the handles of her walker. She wobbled slightly on her weak right leg.

Gabriel watched, his pulse hammering against his ribs, his breath catching in his throat.

Lily took one step.

Then a second.

Gabriel’s fingers pressed so hard into the marble edge of his desk that his knuckles turned white. No therapist had ever gotten Lily to move without tears. Yet here was a simple maid, kneeling on the floor, working a miracle in total secret.

Then, through the high-definition monitor, Gabriel noticed something else—something that made his blood run ice-cold.

As Emma leaned forward to encourage the child, the back collar of her maid's uniform shifted slightly. There, etched into the skin at the base of her neck, was a distinct, dark tattoo—a mark Gabriel recognized instantly.

It was the emblem of the Falcone family—his fiercest, most ruthless rivals in the New York underworld.
