Chapter 5 - THE SIEGE AT THE MANSION

The lights inside the Moretti mansion suddenly went dead, plunging the grand corridors into pitch blackness.

In the nursery, Emma immediately stood up, her heart hammering against her ribs. The backup generators hummed to life seconds later, casting a faint, eerie red emergency light across the room. Outside, thunder clapped loudly, echoing the storm raging over the Hudson River.

Sophia stirred in her crib, letting out a soft whimper. Lily sat up, wide-eyed, clutching her stuffed bear.

"Shh, it's okay, sweethearts," Emma whispered quickly, moving to the cribs. "Emma is right here."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the nursery were pushed open. Emma gasped, shielding the toddlers behind her, but relaxed slightly when she saw Marco step into the room, a drawn firearm in his hand. His expression was grim.

"Emma, grab the girls," Marco commanded urgently. "Someone cut the main lines and jammed our radio frequencies. We have at least four armed men inside the perimeter wall. We're moving to the safe room in the basement now."

Emma didn't hesitate. She gathered Lily into her arms and took Sophia’s hand. "Lead the way."

They moved quickly down the rear service stairs, avoiding the wide marble hallways that were vulnerable to window snipers. The red emergency lights flickered rhythmically. Out in the courtyard, the sound of muffled gunfire shattered the silence of the night. Gabriel’s guards were fighting off the intruders, but the attackers knew the layout of the property terrifyingly well.

As they reached the entrance of the subterranean panic room—a reinforced steel bunker hidden behind a wine cellar wall—a loud crash echoed from the floor above.

"In, now!" Marco ordered, pushing the heavy vault door open.

Emma rushed inside with the girls. Before Marco could follow, two masked men dressed in tactical gear burst through the basement doorway.

"Marco!" Emma screamed.

Marco turned and fired, dropping the first intruder, but the second attacker tackled Marco to the ground, knocking the gun from his hand. A brutal struggle ensued in the dim corridor.

Emma knew she had seconds to act. She set Lily and Sophia down inside the safe room behind a heavy wooden table. "Stay here! Do not move!" she ordered them firmly.

Grabbing a heavy iron wine bottle rack from the cellar wall, Emma sprinted back toward the doorway. The intruder had gained the upper hand, pinning Marco to the floor and raising a silenced pistol toward Marco's head.

With a roar of pure protective rage, Emma slammed the heavy iron rack against the back of the attacker's head with all her strength.

The metal struck with a sickening crunch. The intruder groaned and collapsed unconscious onto the concrete floor.

Marco gasped for air, scrambling to his feet and recovering his weapon. He looked at Emma in sheer disbelief. "Where the hell did you learn to do that?"

"I told you," Emma breathed, her heart pounding in her throat, "I know what a house needs."

Before Marco could lock the heavy steel door from the inside, a shadow stepped out from the darkness at the end of the hall.

A tall man in a tailored leather coat walked forward, pulling off his night-vision goggles. His face was scarred, his eyes filled with sadistic amusement.

It was Frankie Falcone.

He held a high-caliber handgun trained directly at Marco's chest. Behind him, two more heavily armed mercenaries emerged from the shadows.

"Drop the gun, old man," Frankie sneered, his voice dripping with venom. "Or I blow your head off right in front of the little maid."

Marco gritted his teeth, realizing he was completely outnumbered. Slowly, he lowered his weapon to the floor.

Frankie turned his dark eyes onto Emma, a cruel smile spreading across his lips. He looked at the scar visible on her collar.

"Well, well, well," Frankie purred, stepping closer. "If it isn't little Emma Brooks. The traitor's daughter, playing house with Gabriel Moretti. My uncle sent me to finish what we started fifteen years ago."

Emma stood her ground, stepping in front of the safe room door to block his view of the children. "Touch those girls, and Gabriel will hunt you to the ends of the earth."

Frankie laughed—a harsh, barking sound. "Gabriel is ten miles away watching his docks burn. By the time he gets back, I'll have his precious daughters and his cute little maid in the back of my truck. And Gabriel will give us everything he owns to get them back."

Frankie stepped forward, raising his gun to strike Marco down.

At that exact moment, the heavy steel security doors at the end of the basement hall blew inward with a deafening explosion. Smoke, concrete dust, and shattered metal filled the air.
