Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Web

By midday, Marcus Thorne arrived. The retired attorney was elderly, frail, and visibly anxious, escorted by Julian’s private security team. When he entered the study and saw Elena standing by the window, the old man collapsed into a leather armchair, tears spilling into his gray beard.

"Mrs. Sterling... God forgive me," Thorne stammered, his hands shaking violently. "They told me you were dead. Victoria came to my home with men who threatened my grandchildren. They forced me to surrender the sealed vault keys containing your original testament."

Julian slammed his hand onto the mahogany desk. "Who authorized the transfer of the Swiss rental car logs?"

"Callahan," Thorne choked out. "He modified the digital contracts. Victoria promised him twenty percent of the foundation’s offshore liquidity once Clara was made a ward of the state under her guardianship."

Elena stepped toward the elderly lawyer, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Where are the original documents, Marcus?"

"In a safety deposit box at the Hudson National Bank, registered under my late wife's maiden name," Thorne replied. "The keys are in my coat pocket. Everything is intact: your explicit instruction that Victoria was to have zero custody rights or access to Clara’s legacy."

Before Julian could answer, the security intercom buzzed. The lab courier had arrived at the front gate with the official genetic analysis.

Julian looked at Elena. The tension in the room tightened into a single, decisive thread. "Let him up," Julian ordered.
