Chapter 2 - The Return from the Shadow

The mansion plunged into suffocating tension. Julian commanded the security guards to step back, but his posture remained guarded. He stepped into the bedroom, his dress shoes making muffled clicks against the hardwood edges of the rug.

"Clara," Julian said gently, kneeling beside his daughter. Clara shrank slightly, pressing her back against Elena’s side. The child did not look at him; her hands remained woven into Elena’s knit sleeve.

Julian looked up at Elena, his dark eyes searching for deceit. "Elena died in Zurich. The dental records matched. The vehicle exploded on the Alpine pass."

"The records were falsified, Julian," Elena replied, her voice steady despite the moisture on her face. "I was pulled from the river by a local clinic near the border. I had no memory, no papers, and broken ribs. When the fog cleared, I saw Victoria’s press conference announcing the transfer of Clara’s trust fund. That was when I realized the crash wasn't an accident."

Victoria entered the room, her voice laced with defensive outrage. "This is absurd! Julian, look at her. Anyone could stage this. She abandoned Clara for months while we grieved! You can’t let an imposter manipulate this traumatized child."

"An imposter?" Elena stood up, keeping Clara gently behind her. "Victoria, you were the last person to check the maintenance on my rental car in Switzerland. You arranged the itinerary. And you told Julian I wanted Clara sent to boarding school in New England."

Julian’s gaze shifted to Victoria. "Is that true?"

"Of course not!" Victoria snapped. "I have dedicated every day to this family since the tragedy."

Clara reached up, tugging at Elena’s hem. "Mommy, don't leave."

Elena looked down, completely dismissing the adults. She lifted Clara into her arms, resting her chin against the girl's soft blonde hair. "I promised you. Never again."
